What is hazardous material?

Hazardous material is one that is dangerous or potentially harmful to our health or to the environment. Hazardous material can be liquids, solids, gases, or sludge's.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) specifies hazardous if it meets any of four conditions:

  • It exhibits ignitability corrosivity
  • It has been listed as a hazardous waste
  • It is a mixture containing a listed hazardous waste and a nonhazardous waste, unless the mixture is specifically excluded or no longer exhibits any of the four characteristics of hazardous waste
  • It is not specifically excluded from regulation as a hazardous waste
