Design for Sustainability

Home → DFS Principle 5

Systems components should be output pulled rather than input pushed through the use of energy and materials

There are two different methods to market a product. One is called pull type and the other is push type marketing. In pull type marketing, the customer wants/needs the product and in push type marketing, the products are pushed to the customers (regardless of the customer need/want).

There are more students applying for universities than the seats available and hence you can consider universities to be practicing pull type marketing. On the other hand, when it comes to internet marketing the manufacturers are practicing push type marketing.

Typically, when a product is pushed to the customer, it is creating an artificial demand and hence this practice may use more energy and material than required. Therefore, it is not supporting sustainability.

When a product is manufactured to meet the customer demand, the energy and material are used as required to meet the actual demand and hence there is a higher probability that the energy, material use is optimized and waste is minimized. Therefore, this practice supports sustainability.

Practically, executing pull type manufacturing has many operational issues. Also, push type manufacturing creates more revenue and profit than a pull type manufacturing.
